SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Following the decision to build a new fleet for Train Operating Company Northern Spirit in North Yorkshire, Siemens were awarded the contract to provide the train sets. The audio communications elements were required, in addition to the usual Public Address and Crew Communications, interface to and co ordinate with the display screens provided by Siemens. In 1998 GAI-Tronics were awarded a design and build contract for delivery of 16 train sets of communications equipment during 2000.

SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY

The requirement from Siemens is to provide PA receivers, drivers' control panels and passenger call for aid units. In addition to the usual audio pair, additional wiring is utilised for transmission of data to and from the train management system.

A digital speech facility is provided via a drivers' keypad for pre-recorded messages plus a walk through test message facility.

The system is based on the highly successful Heathrow Express high-speed train PA equipment that was also supplied by GAI-Tronics.
