Mill-Wide Pulp & Paper Processing Facility
USA
Emergency Notification System |
SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Management personnel at this pulp and paper processing facility wanted
to protect employees while improving plant efficiency by upgrading the existing communication and emergency notification equipment, thus replacing the existing reporting system of telephones and hand-held radios.
Requirements for the new system included compliance with OSHA guidelines (specifically 1910.165) and the capability of interfacing with existing fire and chemical detection systems. GAI-Tronics' solution was to provide a SmartSeries® system with ADVANCE Emergency Notification capabilities. This design met all of the customer's requirements; further, because the facility had an installed Page/Party® base, GAI-Tronics was
able to make use of existing equipment.
The size of the plant required that it be divided into 8 areas, each further divided into 5 communication zones. Each area is equipped with a SmartSeries® Control Unit, and SmartSeries® stations. This system then provides the backbone for the Mill-Wide Emergency Notification System (ENS). The ENS required installation of a host computer and an additional SmartSeries® Control Unit designated as the Emergency Control Centre (ECC) at the main security gate, and interfacing of the eight control units via the facility's existing fibre optic cable.

SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY
Within each of the eight areas, the Contorl Unit (CU) operator receives input from each of the SmartSeries® zones; this information is displayed on the CU Access Panel VFD. As required, the CU operator enters alarms or generates live pages usinng the CU Access Panel.
Using SmartLink technology via the existing fibre optic cable network, the eight area CUs are linked to the ECC, which monitors alarm and trouble status. Alarm or trouble status received from a SmartSeries® Control Unit is displayed on the computer monitor at the ECC, requiring the operator to determine the appropriate action to take.

SYSTEM DIAGRAM

This illustration shows the basic system layout for this facility. Each 'area' is a fully functional, fire zone communication system. Alarm and priority pages can be generated within each area. The ECC operator receives input from all eight areas and can send alarms selectively to one, several, or all zones.
