SYSTEM OVERVIEW
GAI-Tronics has secured an order for a Driver Guard Communication system and Public Address system for the High Speed Trains (HST) at First Great Western
The largest Train Operating Company (TOC) using High Speed Trains, FGW rail operations cover London commuter services, Intercity and regional railways.
FGW have found that the HST still provides the most reliable solution in meeting their passenger and track profile. Accordingly, they have taken the decision to extend the fleet life by a further 15 years by carrying out a radical upgrade of the trains.
Part of this life extension programme is the replacement of the existing Driver/Guard communication system coupled with a number of new PA announcement points along the train.
In selecting a supplier First were looking for companies that were innovative and proactive, could demonstrate commitment, capability and experience, would work with First’s within First’s culture and provide a quality service. In securing this contract, GAI-Tronics were able to meet all of FGWs requirements and have consequently been awarded the contract to supply in excess of 300 transmitters. Delivery is a key element of the programme and the whole order will be completed within one year.

SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY
Four types of transmitter, each with slightly different functionality to suit different coaches, make up the set of equipment fitted to each train. Units supplied for the buffet cars are capable of making PA announcements only, via an integrated handset. Those supplied for standard accommodation vestibules are again PA only units, but with remotely mounted handsets.
Transmitters supplied for the guard's offices are dual-function units, capable of making either PA announcements or Driver / Guard communications, controlled by a key-switch. This presents a more efficient solution for the guard's offices, where previously two separate transmitters had to be fitted to achieve these functions. These dual function units are also supplied for fitment in new trolley store areas in first class accommodation, where space is at a premium and the compact transmitters enable the installation of a full function communication system within a minimum space envelope.
New transmitters are also supplied for the power cars, capable of Driver / Guard communications only, but with a new automatic announcement feature. If the driver has attempted to contact the guard but has not received a response (because the guard is away from the guard's office), the unit will automatically make a PA announcement requesting the guard to contact the driver.
All of the transmitters have digital audio storage for pre-announcement chimes and pre-recorded messages, which can be re-programmed in situ on the vehicle. The new units are also fully backward compatible with older systems installed on the trains to ensure seamless integration during the changeover process.
