SYSTEM OVERVIEW

GAI-Tronics Corporation was awarded the contract to supply a Public Address and General Alarm (PA/GA) System to the Ensco company for Rig 64. Ensco wanted a fully duplicated system (two central cabinets) and a hot standby amplifier in each system for maximum safety. Further requirements included an interface to the telephone system, beacon activation upon alarm inputs, and an access panel for the control room.

SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY

A "jackup" style rig, had previously been commissioned in the Gulf of Mexico and was due for refurbishment/upgrade before use at a new location. The rig was towed to a facility in Brownsville, TX for the work to be performed.

The Ensco rig required a redundant PA/GA system (two central cabinets) with a telephone interface and industrial-grade telephones. The lead design engineer was especially interested in the point-to-point communication and relay telephone access offered by a PA/GA system. In addition, due to the existence of very noisy areas, there was a requirement for visual signalling to notify personnel that an alarm was sounding.

The equipment racks for the A/B system will house system control and monitoring facilities. This will enable a secure means of informing personnel in the event of an emergency situation by use of broadcasting specific verbal instructions platform-wide. The system is also available for the broadcast of Platform Alarms. The system is continuously and fully monitored for system availability. All loudspeakers are monitored for both open and short circuit conditions.
