Notification and Communication System

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

GAI-Tronics Corporation designed and commissioned a Notification and Communication System for Consolidated Edison plant located at 74th Street Station in New York City. Facility management wanted to upgrade the existing notification system to meet OSHA standards.

SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY

The facility had already installed a 200 station GAI-Tronics Page/Party® system for operational communications, and a Federal Signal emergency notification system consisting of electronic air horns and strobes. Consolidated Edison wanted to utilise the Page/Party® system speakers to broadcast the Federal Signal alarm information in order to provide more effective emergency notification.

Using a GAI-Tronics SmartSeries® Control Unit, the facility was able to complete the system integration and meet OSHA standard 1910.165.(d).4, which addresses alarm system supervision.

The SmartSeries® system is microprocessor-based, allowing the inputs received from the emergency notification system to be given broadcast priority over operational pages. This configuration ensures that emergency pages or alarms are always heard by employees.

The SmartSeries® system also provides a report, via control lines, to both a printer and to a Tile Annunciator System, which provides verbal readouts on a control room board.

The system supervision is performed by the SmartSeries® Control Unit's interface to end-of-line SmartSeries® stations. If the control unit does not receive input from the SmartSeries® stations, an error message is sent to both the printer and to the Tile Annunciator System to alert control room personnel that there is a possible problem with the communication system.
